Nolan Malcolm

Field Supervisor

How long have you been at Gilbert Industries?

8 years

Looking for a job closer to home after working a pipe job for 2 years in New Mexico.

What part of the job do you find most fulfilling?

Completing a tank.

What do you like most about working at Gilbert?

How family-oriented it is. The guys I work with are like family to me.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

Vacationing with my family. I’ve got 6 kids, 11 to 3 months. 3 girls and 3 boys.

What is your professional and educational background before Gilbert?

First, I worked at Polar building aluminum tankers. After that, I took my first road job working on carbon tanks. Then, I took a sanitarian high-pressure job in New Mexico before I came here.

How did you get into welding?

I always wondered about welding growing up. My friend’s dad had his own welding shop where he built custom gates.

What’s been your most memorable experience since joining Gilbert?

Really they’re all memorable. In Washington State we went prairie dog hunting. I did go to Niagra Falls when I was up in New York.

What’s the favorite place you’ve got to visit?

Prosser, Washington. The scenery was beautiful. The mountains were awesome.

What specific project are you proud of or that was particularly memorable? One that showcases your abilities and Gilbert Industries' ability to make innovative solutions?

I go on so many jobs a year it’s hard to think back. Up in Washington, we built 4 grind tanks in a couple of weeks. Also, we just built a tank down in Texas last year. In 9 or 10 days, we built a tank off to the side, tore down the old tank, and then craned over the new one. Up in Cedar Rapids they had a coil that was almost 40 feet tall. We installed 4 fittings at the bottom of the tank and 4 fittings at the upper section of the coil.

What types of tanks have you welded?

I’ve worked on carbon tanks, 2205 stainless, regular 308 and 316.

What are you most looking forward to over the next year?

Professionally: Completing road jobs and spending time with my family.

Personally: I’d like to buy a vacation house down in Florida near where I grew up.
