Employee Spotlight: Mike Mitchell, Purchasing Manager

What do you do at Gilbert Industries?

I am a purchasing agent. I buy all the material for the tanks, the grinding supplies, the welding supplies… I buy everything.

What is a typical day for you like here at work?

I send out all the quotes to all of our vendors and write purchase orders for the parts of the tanks. I’m on the phone a lot with vendors, emailing them as well, I deal with the vendors all the time.

How long have you been at Gilbert Industries?

21 years. 6 months after it started, I came on.

What brought you here?

Josh Gilbert. I was working at a stainless place that was closing down and he invited me to come down and join the team. It was a perfect fit. I knew that family was going to be a good family to work for.

What part of the job do you find most fulfilling?

I would have to say dealing with my vendors on a day-to-day basis and then when the tanks are going out just realizing that I had a part on it. I’m not welding or grinding it but I’m ordering all the materials that go out on that tank.

What do you like most about working at Gilbert?

The location of this business. I love that it’s in a small town, I’ve become friends with all the people here. The Gilberts are good to work for and everyone here is good to work with.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

Bowfishing and elk hunting. Any kind of hunting and fishing. Spending time with the grandkids and the wife.

What is your professional and educational background before Gilbert?

I graduated from Chadwick high school and worked at a local stainless company for 10 plus years and when it was closing, I came here.

What is a specific project that you are proud of or that was particularly memorable? One that showcases your abilities as well as Gilbert Industries ability to make innovative solutions? Or a challenge that was overcome?

It would have probably been during Covid when me and Shane worked to design and head up the operations on the hand sanitizer stands to help carry the company during a slow time.

What are you most looking forward to over the next year?

Professionally: Looking forward to meeting new vendors and continuing to build relationships with our current vendors.

Personally: I would have to say probably looking forward to more bowfishing and hunting and spending time with family.
