Employee Spotlight: Jason Gayer, Structural Engineer

What do you do here at Gilbert Industries and what is a typical day like for you?
I am a structural engineer, involved in performing design calculations and reviewing fabrication drawings for the tanks that we build. Besides working with the others in Sales and Engineering to get drawings out to the shop and field, I get to break up some of the days by helping coordinate maintenance of the computer and security systems.
How long have you been at Gilbert Industries?
Close to 18 years.
What brought you here?
I’m sure I could come up with a number of reasons, but one that comes to mind is that I was looking for place that had just as much professionalism as any I had dealt with, but without the tie. I found it.
What is your educational and professional background before working at Gilbert?
After High School, I eventually graduated from the University of Missouri-Rolla, which is now Missouri S&T, with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. My first job was in St. Louis as a Product Engineer for Alco Controls, which was a manufacturer of equipment for the refrigeration industry. I got an offer to come back to Springfield and worked for Precision Stainless for about 10 years as a structural engineer and have been in the stainless industry ever since. At one point I struck out with a group of guys and started Tank Component Incorporated in Springfield. Around 2005 I left TCI and started working for Gilbert Industries through the joint venture with DCI and have been here ever since.
What part of the job do you find most fulfilling?
Just keeping the ole gray matter working every day.
What do you like most about working at Gilbert?
Being around a good bunch of people every day.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
Being with family and our dogs, fishing, hunting, and working on the farm. I have to admit, those are not always in that order.
What are you most looking forward to over the next year?
Professionally: Seeing the company get more efficient at all levels, which makes all our jobs a little easier.
Personally: Doing a little more fishing and hunting.
